The programme provides theoretical and practical basis for applying IT, mathematical and statistical skills to the analysis of genomic, and multi-omic, data. The international and multidisciplinary environment, together with numerous practical activities are distinctive elements of the course. Training is completed by the curricular internship, in university or external facilities, in Italy or abroad. The programme provides strong knowledge in genetics and molecular biology, as well as competences in computer programming, biostatistics, and computational simulations. Graduates will gain: biocomputing skills for genomic data mining, annotation, and management; theoretical and practical skills for the analysis of biological communities, cell populations and complex systems; elements of bioethics.

Academic Requirements

Foreign secondary school diploma, which was obtained following at least 12 years of schooling and allows the enrolment in Universities in the country where it was issued, according to the rules set by our Ministry of University and Research for the A.Y. 2024/2025 (Please visit the course website for further infomation)

General Requirements

This is a restricted access degree programme that requires the English TOLC-I/TOLC-I in Italian test as entrance exam: besides, this is used also as a check of basic knowledge to identify any weaknesses in your basic preparation, so that remedial activities can be arranged that will help you to complete the curriculum successfully.

Language Proficiency Requirements

English language skills, equivalent to level B2 (or higher) of the Common European Framework (CEFR) through a Language proficiency certificate of IELTS / TOEFL / Cambridge English /Others (Pls visit the course website for more details)

Accomodation Expenses

Living Expenses

Living expenses in Italy may include the following:

  • 1. Other Expenses: In addition to rent, you'll also need to budget for other living expenses such as food, transportation, study materials, health insurance, and leisure activities. These can vary depending on your lifestyle and habits but typically add several hundred euros to your monthly budget.

  • 2. Utilities: Don't forget to budget for utilities such as electricity, water, gas, internet, and possibly garbage collection. These costs can add an extra €50 to €150 per month, depending on usage and location

Italy provides two types of scholarships to international students:

  • 1. Merit-based, &
  • 2. Need-based

The primary objective of these scholarships is to assist academically bright students who require financial assistance for their higher education. These scholarships are also a way to promote the country’s cultural and educational sectors globally.

International students who are awarded with the Italian government scholarships are exempted from tuition or enrolment fees. In addition, you can also get a monthly stipend of Euros 900 approximately to cover your accommodation and food expenses and health and medical insurance.

The payment will be transferred after every three, six, or nine months, depending on your degree.

To study in Italy you will need a visa and the process to apply for the same differs from country to country. Below is a general process that is more relevant to Indian students.

  • 1. You need to apply for a visa through an Italian embassy closest to your residency.
  • 2. Start your visa application as early as possible as it may take up to 3 months for your visa to be granted.
  • 3. Your passport must not be more than 10 years old and must be valid for at least 3 months more than the duration of the visa applying for.
  • 4. Once all your documents are ready you can ‘book an appointment’ at a visa application centre and visit the centre on the date of appointment to submit your documents and get your biometrics done.
  • 5. You also need to pay a visa fee which can be done at the centre itself.
  • 6. Once a decision has been made on your application, you can either collect your passport from the visa application centre or get it couriered to you.

How to Apply:

  • 1. Access Studenti Online (www.studenti.unibo.it) click on “Registrati” and then “Registrazione studenti internazionali”. The Unibo Credentials that will be created are valid throughout the whole academic career and are required to access all online services at Unibo.

Note: Please make sure you insert all your data carefully (use the format: day/month/year). Your data must match those on the CISIA Website (www.cisiaonline.it) in order to get your tests results correctly.

  • 2. Register to the intake > Click on “Entrance exams or requirements check”> Select “First cycle degree programme”> Select “Genomics”

Working in Italy while studying

• As a student in Italy, you are allowed to work part-time.

• You can work part-time up to 20 hours per week during your studies and full-time during vacations.

• You need to obtain a temporary residence permit though.

Working in Italy after completing your studies

• As a Non-EU student, if you want to work in Italy after graduation, you will need a work permit.

• You can stay back in Italy for 12 months after completing your masters or PhD degree.

• You can apply for a post-study work permit only once you get a full-time job or an intership opportunity

• Your employer needs to apply for a work permit for you termed as 'Nulla osta al lavoro'

• Once the employer received the work permit, the student can proceed with his application for post-study work visa.

• Once you recieve your post-study work visa, only then you can apply for a residence permit.

• Generally any student holding a residence permit while studying and working part-time is bound to get a residence permit to work full-time in Italy

Getting a PR in Italy

Non-EU nationals who already hold a temporary residence permit can apply for a permanent residence permit if they fulfill the following requirements:

• To be able to apply for a PR in Italy you should have spent at least 5 years

• You should be working full-time with an Italian employer and should be required to stay in Italy.
